Ce puissant bloc est facile à utiliser et offre aux marins d'énormes avantages dans le contrôle de la grand-voile, leur permettant de réduire rapidement la puissance de l'armement et de retarder le ris lorsque le vent se renforce. Comme un winch captif compact pour le chariot, l'enrouleur plat est complètement autonome. Il fonctionne dans les deux sens, permettant au chariot de se déplacer n'importe où sur le rail tout en maintenant la ligne du chariot hors du sol du cockpit. Harken recommande d'installer deux systèmes numériques à double fonction Switch économes en espace, un bouton à bâbord, l'autre à tribord, pour une activation des deux côtés du bateau. Le réa à large diamètre du bloc est monté sur une base inclinée, formant un angle avec le haut du réa pour contenir la ligne afin qu'elle ne pousse pas contre les parois du bloc. Cette prise progressive exerce juste la bonne quantité de friction pour minimiser l'usure de la ligne et des composants. De plus, l'enrouleur plat élimine le besoin de winches, rendant le pont plus propre et plus facile à naviguer.
