What type of tools are required for installation?
Tools needed include safety glasses, wrenches, hydraulic tools, Phillips and flat screwdrivers, marine sealant, thread sealant, hydraulic hose, and Mercury steering fluid.
Are there any hoses that must not be cut or removed during installation?
You must not cut or remove the high-pressure hydraulic hose that connects to the “P” connector on the upper helm or the "P" or "T" connectors on the lower helm.
What kind of fluid should be used after installation?
Fill the pump reservoir with Mercury steering fluid. This fluid is not included in the kit.
Is the hydraulic hose for the return line included in the kit?
No, the hydraulic hose is not included. You must supply the appropriate hose for your installation.
What is the function of the ORFS T-fittings and shut-off ball valves?
The ORFS T-fittings and shut-off ball valves isolate the pump from the hydraulic system as shown in the installation instructions.
How should a single-helm installation differ regarding T-fittings?
On a single-helm boat, there should not be a T-fitting between the helm and Shadow Drive sensor.
How is the return hose connected to the SmartPump?
Install the included T-fitting in the cut return hose, clamp connections, and route hose to the SmartPump, connecting with the included fitting and clamp.
Where should the Shadow Drive sensor be installed?
The Shadow Drive sensor must be installed horizontally, as level as possible, and not directly onto the helm; use a hydraulic hose between the helm and sensor.
Can the Shadow Drive sensor be installed on either port or starboard line?
Yes, the Shadow Drive sensor can be installed in either the port or starboard hydraulic line.
What hydraulic layouts are provided for guidance?
The manual provides single-helm and dual-helm layout diagrams, including notes on steering cylinder, Shadow Drive sensor, and return lines.
